Tracing Yahoo ID to Get User IP Address

It was initially possible to gain the IP of the person you are chatting with in Yahoo Chat / Yahoo messenger using the netstat command or a simple GUI tool like Process Explorer. for Windows. However, Yahoo fixed that. Still, if you try to use a ‘packet sniffer’ program you should be able to do that.

You can try ethereal or winpcap [http://www.ethereal.com (for ethereal) ; http://winpcap.polito.it/ (for winpcap)]. However, network sniffing may be illegal in your area and you should check beforehand. Then you need to get a whois program.

You can get one here: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/trout.html

Yahoo! Messenger Firewall Changes

Yahoo official Messenger blog (ymessengerblog.com) that unspecified changes will be made to the way firewalled users will use Messenger. The article mentions that only users that are using version 8.x and signed in from behind a firewall will be affected. An official message will be sent by Yahoo! urging users to upgrade to the latest 9.x version of the software.

From a programming standpoint this will most likely only affect Messenger operations that require a peer to peer (p2p) connection such as file sharing. When performing a peer to peer operation, Messenger makes a discussion (largely based on the firewall settings but not always) to either create a true peer to peer connection or to use the Yahoo! servers to create a pseudo peer to peer connection.

The pseudo p2p connection uses a Yahoo! server as a proxy to create the connection because one of the clients does not have to ability to accept unsolicited connections. I do not know why this is only affecting 8.x users because the 9.x series has the same capability to offer proxy connections. Perhaps this is a drive to get users to switch to the latest version but at any rate, users of 8.x software should still be able to use that version as long as you don’t need to use the pseudo p2p connection.

Signed Out Settings on My Yahoo!

My Yahoo! will be making a change to the amount of time we save changes that a signed out user makes to a My Yahoo! page from two months to twenty four hours. We will continue to allow you to use My Yahoo! to its fullest extent whether you are signed in or out of your Yahoo! account but if you wish us to remember all of the customization choices you make on any device or computer and across Yahoo!, then you must sign in to your Yahoo! account to save those choices.

Every time you visit My Yahoo! when you are signed in to your Yahoo! account, we display all of your added content & pages, themes and personal customizations you’ve done. Regardless of which computer or device you use to access My Yahoo!, as long as you are signed in to Yahoo!, we’re going to display your personal My Yahoo! pages and your customizations.

For those of you that utilize My Yahoo! when you are not signed in to your Yahoo! account, you have likely experienced a time when some of the applications you’ve added or customizations you’ve done have “disappeared”. This is because signed out personalization choices you make are tied to the browser you are using to view My Yahoo! and saved in “browser cookies”. If these cookies are deleted, either by choice or accident, you lose the personalization. Also, if you do not access My Yahoo! for an extended period of time, those browser cookies eventually expire.

In addition, since signed out personalization is tied just to the computer or device you are using at the time and not saved to your Yahoo! account, you will not be able to access these personalization choices when accessing My Yahoo! from another computer or device.

In short, if you wish to save customizations you make on My Yahoo! for longer than 24 hours and access them from any device or computer, sign in to save your settings.

Two New Directors Elected At Yahoo

Patti Hart, the CEO of International Game Technology, and Brad Smith, the president and CEO of Intuit, now have ties to Yahoo, too.  Yahoo's shareholders effectively welcomed these individuals to the company by electing them to its board of directors.

Hart and Smith are replacing John Chapple and Ronald Burkle, who didn't seek reelection.  And since Chapple came aboard as part of Carl Icahn's attempt to take over Yahoo, this development should represent something of a return to normality.

Roy Bostock, the chairman of Yahoo's board of directors, was certainly quick to applaud the move and welcome the new members.  "Both Brad and Patti are tremendous additions to the Yahoo! Board of Directors and bring a wealth of expertise," he said in a statement.

Bostock then continued, "We look forward to leveraging Brad's extensive experience with consumer products and the distribution of large scale software solutions over the Internet, and Patti's deep leadership experience in Internet and technology companies as well as her public company board work."

Interestingly, no specific mention was made of the Microsoft deal, which is the biggest thing on Yahoo's plate.  But again, it's unlikely that anyone would try to alter or derail the arrangement.  The omission was probably more of an attempt to focus on Yahoo's strengths as an independent company.

Yahoo's stock is down 1.08 percent so far this morning, by the way, but Google, Microsoft, the Dow, and the Nasdaq are all in the red, as well.

Tips To avoid from Yahoo Messenger Hacking

Yahoo messenger is a very nice and useful place to meet new buddies and get connected with the old ones. Just be safe and secure and follow the following steps, You will be fine. With plenty of options and buddies around, you can not just leave Yahoo Messenger once you have grown used to it. But where there is crowd, there are risk factors too. Alarmingly people have lost their accounts to hackers and have got millions of spyware and junk mails thanks to Yahoo messenger and its spam friendly technology.

Just be safe and secure and follow the following steps, You will be fine. Tips To avoid from Yahoo Messenger Hacking :

1. Expected To Use Newer Versions of Yahoo Messenger

The more you stay with the older versions and feel lazy to get upgraded, the more you are helping the hackers. Yahoo or any software, brings out these updates not only to extend features but also due to security reasons. A newer version of yahoo messenger 10 is hardly bootable by DoS attack whereas Yahoo Messenger 7 can be booted out or hacked by a script kiddie.

2. Do not download Yahoo Plug-ins from Unauthorized source

Do not ever download a plug-in of Yahoo messenger from any other site however lucrative it be. Plug-ins like these exploit the vulnerability once installed and send your account details to a third party revealing and cracking down your id. So, better be safe than sorry.

3. Use other yahoo 3rd party Chat Clients

Yahoo Messenger has too many loopholes. It doesn't have a strong security to block contents either. So, if you want to get rid of spams and porn contents all under one go, then you should go for some popular and secure yahoo chat clients like Yazak, y!supra. You can also go for Yah-Elite and Yam They may not have the same sophisticated GUI or entertainment features but they will increase the security of the chat sessions by many folds.

4. Avoid P2P file Sharing Through Yahoo Messenger

Be it known or unknown, prefer not to receive any file from your friend unless you know what he is sharing and why. Avoid downloading .exe or .zip files from them as they are more likely to attack your computer or install trozans without you being aware of it. Never trust a stranger when he asks you to click on any site you haven't heard of.

5. Avoid Clicking on Spammy Links

If you were chatting with someone else and suddenly a PM box flashes on the screen with a lucrative offer/interesting site which has a spammy look, don't click on it. These websites have a lot of spyware who get silently installed if you go and surf them. Never download a toolbar unless its as authenticated as Yahoo's or Google's.

6. Use Ignore Option Effectively

Yahoo has an ignore option that lets you ban a person or mark as spam so that he can't disturb you once again. Use that option effective. Go to Yahoo Messenger main box -> Preferences -> Ignore List. If you want to avoid talking to strangers (which I always recommend)i.e. wanna talk to your buddies only, Check Ignore anyone.. option. That helps you be safe and block on the unwanted and potential hackers from reaching you.

7. Use Proxy if you have a Better Firewall

Yahoo also gives you option to change your proxy. Go to Preferences and hunt down Proxy servers. You will see that you can set your own proxy server so that Yahoo gets redirected through yours giving you a better chance to protect yourself and secure by your network. But if only you have that faith on your network security. You can change it by going to Yahoo Messenger main box -> Preferences -> Connection

8. Use Word Filter

You can also use your word Filter in Yahoo messenger. It just discards all the obscene or threatening words by intelligent filtering system if you choose Strong option. But be aware, there may be some times when your own friend can get banned while cursing your jokingly. Word filter is another good option to be within your network and not let some specifically targeted spammers to arrive. It increases security too. You can change it by going to Yahoo Messenger main box -> Preferences -> Chat.

9. Be sure to Delete Your Profile after Chatting from a Public computer

Most of the users don't know about it. Whenever you sign in to yahoo messenger, yahoo makes a profile of yours in the directory Yahoo -> Messenger -> Profiles by the name of your yahoo id. There is an option by default at Yahoo messenger that messages will be saved as long as you are signed in to your account for that session. A good hacker can have access to that file and decrypt it to learn your private conversations.

What you must do if you are sharing a public computer to chat from, is, you can change it by going to Yahoo Messenger main box -> Preferences -> Archive. Change it to No, do not save any of my messages and you are done. Oh don't forget to delete your profile from Profiles inside Yahoo folder after you sign out.

10. Apply Your Common sense and Use a good Antivirus and anti spyware software

Applying your common sense is the least you can do to prevent your account from being hacked. A good anti-virus and anti-spyware always warns you about dangers that you may have overlooked. So its better to have them as well. If you implement the above 9 tips, you won't need to worry much I gues until you personally hand over your information to the person willing to crack your computer down.

Disable n Remove Ads on Yahoo Messenger 9 using Hosts File

This is simple tricks and almost easiest way to disable or remove Ads aka Advertisements from Yahoo Messenger 9 (in all version, newest update included). Banner Ads would suddenly remove using this trick.

The ways to remove this YM 9 Ads is simple: Just make the ads don't allow to download from the internet address resources servers. This means, by modified the way we connect to the internet, Yahoo Messenger 9 Ads would be removed and disappears forever.

This trick works in almost of Windows Version: 200, XP, Vista even Windows 7. The trick is simple. Just open the Hosts File in c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and then edit the file using notepad and add the line

127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com

in the hosts file.

For vista users, you may need to open notepad first as run as administrator before you open the host file in c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and you have to change the folder option to disable "hide operating system files" before you can open the host file.

After you add the 127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com in the hosts file, that means you'll connect to local host when the internet connection try to open insider.msg.yahoo.com (that usually used to download banner ads of Yahoo Messenger and other functions). This would make the Yahoo Messenger 9 Ads load an error blank page. This means the ads would disappear!

Using this trick sometimes make the plugin and others features of Yahoo Messenger would disable also. Be wise!
