Why We Still Need Smallpox

Why We Still Need Smallpox ... Once they are ready, we intend to share the fruits of this research with the world. Destroying the virus now is merely a symbolic act that would slow our progress and could even stop it completely, leaving the world vulnerable

In a few weeks, member states of the World Health Organization will consider the destruction of the last known samples of smallpox virus, currently held in secure labs by the United States and Russia. Some have sought to publicly frame this issue as a contentious disagreement between our two countries and the rest of the world over whether the virus should be destroyed. This is misleading.

We fully agree that these samples should — and eventually will — be destroyed.

However, we also recognize that the timing of this destruction will determine whether we continue to live with the risk of the disease re-emerging through deliberate misuse of the virus by others.

Those who advocate immediate destruction would have us believe that another smallpox outbreak is unthinkable. They want us to believe that there is no need to ensure the global community is adequately prepared to deal with an outbreak and that the only risk comes from maintaining the highly secured samples. For these reasons, they argue that the World Health Assembly should set an immediate date for destruction.

It should not. Although keeping the samples may carry a miniscule risk, both the United States and Russia believe the dangers of destroying them now are far greater.

Smallpox was one of the most devastating diseases humanity has ever faced, killing more than 300 million people in the 20th century alone. The victims it didn’t kill were often left scarred and blind. But thanks to the most successful global vaccination campaign in history, the disease was completely eradicated by 1980.

At that time, the WHO called on all nations to destroy their collections of smallpox virus or transfer them to the WHO-sanctioned collections at one of two labs in Russia or the United States. The global public health community assumes that all nations acted in good faith; however, no one has ever attempted to verify or validate compliance with the WHO request.

It is quite possible that undisclosed or forgotten stocks exist. Also, 30 years after the disease was eradicated, the virus’ genomic information is available online and the technology now exists for someone with the right tools and the wrong intentions to create a new smallpox virus in a laboratory. Furthermore, there are additional pox viruses that infect humans, and while they are not likely to produce the same degree of suffering that smallpox historically inflicted, they could still be dangerous.

In other words, we’ve beaten smallpox once, but we must be ready and prepared to beat it again, if necessary.

Today, most of the world’s population has no immunity to the disease. Once it was eradicated, we stopped routine civilian vaccination for smallpox. In fact, people under the age of 30 have little or no immunity to smallpox. Should an outbreak occur, we do have effective vaccines that could be deployed to protect most Americans. But global supplies are limited and some people cannot safely use the current vaccine for medical reasons.

Fortunately, in the three decades since eradication, science has come a long way. The vaccine used until the 1970s was little different from the crude vaccine developed by Edward Jenner more than 200 years ago. Today, new technologies and advances in vaccine development exist that could allow us to produce a vaccine without the rare but dangerous side effects of the original. Globally, work is under way to develop and test these vaccines. We should not stop now.

Even with an improved vaccine, vaccination alone will not save those who have already been infected once an outbreak has begun. That is why we are also working on developing, testing and licensing effective new drugs to treat smallpox for those patients with the disease. Scientists in laboratories in a number of countries are making progress on these new antiviral drugs and alternative therapeutic agents that, in the event of a new smallpox outbreak, could control the disease’s progression and greatly reduce the risk of death.

We have more work to do before these safe and highly effective vaccines and antiviral treatments are fully developed and approved for use. Once they are ready, we intend to share the fruits of this research with the world. Destroying the virus now is merely a symbolic act that would slow our progress and could even stop it completely, leaving the world vulnerable.

Destruction of the last securely stored viruses is an irrevocable action that should occur only when the global community has eliminated the threat of smallpox once and for all. To do any less keeps future generations at risk from the re-emergence of one of the deadliest diseases humanity has ever known. Until this research is complete, we cannot afford to take that risk.

Kawasaki Disease and Symptoms

Kawasaki Disease and Symptoms. Kawasaki disease which is also known as the kawasaki syndrome, lymph node syndrome or sometimes as mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome is a autoimmune condition in which the walls of both small and medium arteries in the entire body including the coronary arteries are affected.

Kawasaki Disease Signs and Symptoms

According to Wikipedia, the commons signs and symptoms of Kawasaki disease include:

"High-grade fever (greater than 39 °C or 102 °F; often as high as 40 °C or 104 °F). The duration of fever is on average one to two weeks; in the absence of treatment, it may extend for three to four weeks. However, when appropriate therapy is started the fever is gone after two days.

Red eyes (conjunctivitis) bilateral without pus or drainage, also known as "conjunctival injection".
Strawberry tongue, white coating on the tongue or prominent red bumps (papillae) on the back of the tongue.
Peeling (desquamation) palms and soles (later in the illness); peeling may begin around the nails.
Rash which may take many forms, non-specific, polymorphic, non-itchy, but not vesicle-bullous lesions, and appears on the trunk.

Swollen lymph nodes (frequently only one lymph node is swollen, and is usually on one side), particularly in the neck area."

Kawasaki Disease

Kawasaki Disease, Signs of Kawasaki disease, such as a high fever and peeling skin, can be frightening. The good news is that Kawasaki disease is usually treatable, and most children recover from Kawasaki disease without serious problems.

Kawasaki Disease
The worst diseases you can think of are ones that target little children. Those that are helpless and innocent do not seem like they should be up for disease and torment but so many times this is just not the case. There are many people fighting to find a cure for this disease but still it eludes even the best of them. Kawasaki disease can affect the heart if not caught and treated early.

If Kawasaki disease is treated quickly children could recover in as little as a couple of days. I suggest that you keep a good look out if you notice your children getting some of these symptoms:
  • severe redness in the eyes
  • a rash on the stomach, chest, and genitals
  • red, dry, cracked lips
  • swollen tongue with a white coating and big red bumps
  • sore, irritated throat
  • swollen palms of the hands and soles of the feet with a purple-red color
  • swollen lymph nodes
While Kawasaki disease can occur in any ethnic group it is more common among children of Japanese or Koren descent. There are 19 out of every 100,000 kids in the US that have this disease.

The Right Cosmetic Dentist

This is a type of veneer that requires very little, if any, drilling and rarely any numbness. Traditional veneers require numbing and prepping the teeth, more like a cap would. But some dentists warn that the seemingly less painful route may not be an option for everyone.....

If the saying “You’re never fully dressed without a smile” is true, then cosmetic dentists of today are some of the most important wardrobe consultants around.

Research seems to bear that out. According to a survey conducted by Beall Research & Training of Chicago, eight subjects who had mild to major cosmetic improvements to their teeth were judged as more attractive, intelligent, successful, interesting, and wealthy by a group of 528 respondents.

Thanks to the recent advances in dental technology, dentists are now able to provide patients with cosmetic restorations such as porcelain veneers, which not only improve theappearance of their teeth but, at the same time, make their teeth stronger and healthier.

Cosmetic dental work, which enhances the overall appearance of a patient’s teeth and smile, is increasingly gaining popularity as an elective procedure. The options also are more varied.

The latest trends, by far, are whitening veneers, porcelain crowns, and invisible orthodontics. Among the most popular and common procedures to enhance smiles—veneers—are offered in various options. Veneers are ultra-thin coverings made of plastics, porcelain, or laminates that are bonded directly to the tooth to cover broken, chipped, or cracked teeth.

The latest trend in veneers is called lumineers. This is a type of veneer that requires very little, if any, drilling and rarely any numbness. Traditional veneers require numbing and prepping the teeth, more like a cap would. But some dentists warn that the seemingly less painful route may not be an option for everyone. Not all patients are candidates for lumineers, but there are possible combinations that can be done if necessary.

Be further warned. When considering porcelain veneers, don’t assume your family dentist is, by default, skilled in bonding or veneering procedures. All dentists are not created equally when it comes to cosmetic dentistry and especially porcelain veneers.

Knowing how to choose a cosmetic dentist and what questions to ask is important. websites such as the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry can be a good resource for finding a dentist, but most agree that patient referrals coupled with before and after pictures are good indications of a cosmetic dentist’s abilities.

Selecting a cosmetic dentist using referrals from satisfied patients is always the best. It is advisable for those considering a cosmetic dentist to ask for photographs of patients. Asking to see photos of before and after cases the dentist has done can be helpful also.

It is important to ask if the pictures are actually the doctor’s patients, as pictures can be purchased. Patients should never hesitate to get a second opinion and to take advantage of complimentary consultations from cosmetic dentists.

Training and experience can range from none to extensive. You must do your research.

Cigarette Warning Labels Be Used

I know that large quantities of decadent food isn't good for my body, but it tastes so good! And drinking, well, you can't just have one glass of wine at dinner right?

Cigarette Warning Labels Be Used : Health. It's something most of us have but take for granted.

We treat our bodies like trash and then wonder why it's not functioning at optimal levels. I've been guilty of this especially when it comes to eating or drinking.

I know that large quantities of decadent food isn't good for my body, but it tastes so good! And drinking, well, you can't just have one glass of wine at dinner right?

Hey, at least I don't smoke. I find it repulsive and the smell disgusting.

Mesothelioma Cancer

In severe cases of Mesothelioma Cancers, the person may have many tumor masses. The individual may develop a pneumothorax, or collapse of the lung in extreme situations. The malignant Mesothelioma cancers might also metastasize, or spread, to other parts of the body causing other malignant cancers in other organs or body parts.

Mesothelioma Cancer
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is highly correlated to the previous high exposure With Mesothelioma Cancers, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium which is a protective fine lining or sac that covers the organs inside the body.

Most of the Mesothelioma Cancer develop near or at the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Generally, the majorities of people who develop mesothelioma cancers have had or are working in jobs where they are exposed to asbestos particles thus inhaling it. Secondary exposure can also occur to those who are in contact with the substance too such as those who wash the clothes of family members to work with asbestos or even being exposed to renovations where old asbestos based roof linings or cement is removed and dust forms.

The problem with all types of Mesothelioma Cancer are that most signs will not appear until 20 to 50 years after harmful exposure to asbestos. The time in which it takes for the first mesothelioma symptoms to present is what makes this cancer particularly harmful. Often if the patient exhibits symptoms, the Mesothelioma cancer would have progressed so far that treatment proves to be extremely difficult.

There are several types of Mesothelioma Cancers, each with its own specific symptoms and signs. For Pleural Mesothelioma, shortness of breath, excessive coughing, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often signs of the affliction. As a consequence of this the patient will normally suffer from acute shortness of breath, wheezing, hoarseness and deep coughing.

Another type of Mesothelioma Cancer is Peritoneal Mesothelioma. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other possible symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include excessive bowel disturbance and occasional obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body then these severe stage will show symptoms like pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

Additionally, in severe cases of Mesothelioma Cancers, the following signs and symptoms may be present indicating the advanced stages:
  • blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis;
  • disseminated intravascular coagulation, a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs;
  • jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes and skin;
  • low blood sugar level;
  • pleural effusion;
  • pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs;
  • severe ascites.
In addition to giving you the required information about mesothelioma and how to live with it we can also give you contacts to specialized mesothelioma lawyers and mesothelioma attorneys where you can start your claims process for your personal injury.

Mesothelioma Symptoms

Depending on the type of mesothelioma, slightly different symptoms can occur. Peritoneal disease has an effect on the intestines, liver and other structures in the abdominal cavity. As fluid builds up, the abdomen can become very expanded. Because the liver plays a big part in......

Mesothelioma Symptoms
Mesothelioma develops many years after exposure to asbestos. Sometimes, it may be 30 to 40 years before symptoms occur. Unfortunately, in the early stages of the disease, symptoms may be vague or not noticeable. Thus, if you have been exposed to asbestos in the past, even for a very brief time, it’s important to have regular check-ups to detect any lung abnormalities, even if you don’t have symptoms.

Benign lung disease, such as asbestosis is common in people who have been exposed to asbestos. The symptoms can be very similar, and only a complete medical exam can provide an accurate diagnosis.

Early detection of mesothelioma allows doctor to use more effective and more powerful treatments. For this reason, you should watch carefully for any of the symptoms of mesothelioma.

Symptoms of Mesothelioma may include:

* Coughing
* Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
* Difficulty Sleeping
* Weight Loss
* Pain in chest and abdomen
* Fluid in the chest

Mesothelioma Symptoms
Usually, difficulty breathing and a lingering cough bring patients into the doctor for evaluation. This occurs because tumors of the mesothelium make if hard for the lungs to expand smoothly. Large tumors, or tumors that spread to the chest wall can cause chest pain. When fluid builds up in the pleura, breathing can be even more difficult while lying down, making it hard to sleep. The spread of cancerous cells takes a toll on your body, causing weakness, extreme fatigue. Changes in your body’s ability to absorb nutrients as a result of invasion into the abdomen can cause weight loss. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

Depending on the type of mesothelioma, slightly different symptoms can occur. Peritoneal disease has an effect on the intestines, liver and other structures in the abdominal cavity. As fluid builds up, the abdomen can become very expanded. Because the liver plays a big part in manufacturing the substances needed to control bleeding, there is often a change in your ability to make blood clots. Weight loss occurs for several reasons, and is more dramatic in this form of the disease.

The pleural form of mesothelioma can also cause damage to the upper airway. Swallowing can become difficult, and voice changes can occur if the larynx is affected.

Specific symptoms of Peritoneal mesothelioma:

* Weight loss
* Abdominal pain
* Buildup of fluid in the abdomen
* Bowel obstruction
* Abnormal blood clotting
* Abdominal mass
* Fever

Specific symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma:

* Pain in the lower back
* Pain in the side of chest
* A persistent cough
* Shortness of breath
* Husky voice
* Difficulty swallowing
* Fever

Regardless of the location, malignant mesotheliomas occur in three forms. The epithelioid type is the most common, accounting for 50-70% of all mesotheliomas. Between 20-35% of mesotheliomas are sarcomatoid. The remaining 7-20% of tumors are classified as mixed/biphasic. Epithelioid mesothelioma has the best outlook for survival.

If your symptoms suggest you may have mesothelioma, you doctor will order a number of tests. Imaging studies like X-rays, CT scans and MRI show any abnormalities within the lungs. A complete blood count and levels of specific proteins can help make the diagnosis. However, the diagnosis of mesothelioma cannot be made by blood work and imaging studies in every case. Other more common diseases such as benign asbestos-related pleural disease and metastatic adenocarcinoma can have very similar appearances on imaging studies. Biopsy, and the use of special staining are often necessary for the accurate diagnosis of mesothelioma.

Promising studies on the early detection of mesothelioma may soon provided more accurate methods for diagnosis. If you have these warning signs you should consultant a qualified medical professional immediately. Only a doctor can make a diagnosis.

What is Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer.  Mesothelium also lines the male and female reproductive organs. mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos. In mesothelioma, the cells of the mesothelium become cancerous and grow out of control. Mesothelioma is a serious and rare form of lung cancer.

Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a serious and rare form of lung cancer.  It is most frequently seen in men between the ages of 50 to 70. Women are affected far less frequently. In the US, between 2000 and 3000 cases are diagnosed each year.  Estimates suggest that the incidence of mesothelioma for every 100,000 in the US is about 1.8 and 0.9 internationally.  This form of cancer affects people of every race equally. The number of people who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma has increased significantly in the past 30 years.  Although many advances in treatment have been made, there is no cure for this type of cancer.

In mesothelioma, the cells of the mesothelium become cancerous and grow out of control. The mesothelium is a protective, two-layered membrane that covers the internal organs of the body including the lungs, heart and abdominal organs. Between these layers, the cells produce fluid, which allows easy movement of the heart and lungs within the chest cavity.  The layer that covers the lungs is called the pleura, and the layer that covers the heart is called the pericardium. The peritoneum lines the abdominal cavity.  Mesothelium also lines the male and female reproductive organs.   Mesothelioma can affect any of these cells, but is usually seen in the pleural or peritoneal mesothelium. The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural.
Mesothelioma - cancer

The primary risk factor for developing mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Between 70-80% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos, usually in the workplace.  Although it is possible to develop mesothelioma without any exposure to asbestos, it is very rare. While one person for every million people in the US will be diagnosed with mesothelioma, about 7-13 men who have been exposed to asbestos will be diagnosed with the disease. Symptoms frequently take 20 years to develop, but can take as long as 50 years to occur.

When cancerous cells invade the mesothelium, it becomes increasingly difficult to breathe.   In the pleural form of mesothelioma, tumors growing in the mesothelium cause pleural effusions, which prevent the smooth movement of the lungs and other organs in the chest.  Peritoneal mesothelioma invades the abdominal cavity and can cause loss of appetite weight loss, nausea and vomiting.  Most patients seek medical care after having symptoms only 4-6 months.

Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer.  Because it takes so long for symptoms to appear it can spread to the other organs in the chest, the chest wall and into the lymph nodes. The cancerous cells spread, or metastasize from the mesothelium into other parts of the body and damage internal tissues and organs.  Treatment is more effective when the disease is detected early.

Treatment is aimed at reducing the size of tumors, and relieving symptoms.  Chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgery are some of the traditional treatment strategies used to help patients live longer, with fewer symptoms.  New advances in photodynamic therapy and immunotherapy give hope for prolonging the lives of patients with mesothelioma.  On average, however, the life expectancy after being diagnosed with mesothelioma is less than one year.
